Pop Art Celebrity Final Blog Post

When you finish your painting, you will photograph it and create a final blog post with the following:

  • a photo of your finished celebrity painting
  • a set of your 4 favorite PNG or JPGs of your celebrity that you created in Photoshop

Here is an example of the pictures I am looking for:

Artist Statement Brainstorming Questions:

  • Describe your artwork
    • What does your artwork look like?
    • What is the subject matter?
    • What art elements (ex. color, value, shape, line, texture, form) or principles are most obvious in your work?
  • How did you create your art?
    • What media is your artwork made from?
    • Describe the process or steps you took to create your artwork.
  • What is the big idea behind your artwork?
    • Who or what inspired your artwork?
    • What is your artwork about?
    • How do you want people to feel when they view your artwork?
  • Overall thoughts
    • What did you learn from creating this artwork?
    • Is the final piece what you imagined? How so?
    • What did you do well? What could you have done better?

Today we will:

  • Create a new blog post with the following:
    • a photo of your finished celebrity painting
    • a set of your 4 favorite PNG or JPGs of your celebrity that you created in Photoshop
    • a 150 word artist statement about the project

Creating Form through Value

Today’s essential questions: What parts of the face typically have highlights?
What parts typically have shadows?

Today we will discuss how to create the illusion of form through value with acrylic paint.

Make sure you are painting the correct parts of your portrait with the correct values.
If done properly, this will make your painting look realistic, as in the example below:
drake_proper_value_scale

If values are painted in incorrect spots, you painting will look frightening,
even if your drawing was spot on:
drake_incorrect_value_scale

Today we will:

  • Discuss how to create the illusion of form through value with acrylic paint
  • Finish mixing our value scales and painting our value strips (if we have not done so already)
  • Paint our celebrity portraits according to the number guide we have made
  • Post a photo of our progress to our blogs

Mixing a Value Scale

Today’s essential question: Why is it important to mix and paint your value scale before painting your celebrity portrait?

Today we will learn how to mix a value scale. It is important to create a value scale that gets lighter or darker in even increments, and illustrated below:
green_monochromatic_value_scale

When people first paint, they often have trouble mixing paint in even increments, because the ratio of paint used does not always result in the expected value change. This results in value scales like the one below:
bad_value_scale

If you accidentally add too much white to a color and need to dark it, you must add more of the original color, NOT black. Adding black will desaturate the color, and your paint will no longer go with the rest of the color scale:

If you have not finished your set of Photoshop prints or Multiple Mes project, please schedule a time to come to the art room during Advisement or lunch to catch up. We will be starting a new project when we return from winter break.

Today we will:

  • Watch Ms. Lawson mix a value scale with acrylic paint
  • Finish sketching our celebrity portraits in paint-by-number style on posterboard
  • Label each section of the portrait with the appropriate value
  • Mix our value scales and paint them on a strip of cardboard
  • Begin painting our celebrity portraits
  • Post a photo of our progress to the blog

Featured Artist: Andy Warhol

Today’s essential question: What are some ways our celebrity prints are similar to the artwork of Andy Warhol? What are some ways they are different?

Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art, or the art of popular culture. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising. By the 1960s, Warhol ran a studio known as “The Factory,” where he collaborated with dozens of assistants and celebrities, eventually becoming a celebrity himself. Learn more about Andy Warhol from the Warhol Foundation.

Here is a 1 minute video of Andy Warhol making a print. Do you think his assistant should have received credit? Why or why not?

Why do you think Andy Warhol focused on printmaking instead of drawing or painting?

Do you think Andy Warhol would have used Photoshop if he were alive today? Why or why not?

Here are some of Andy Warhol’s prints:

Today we will:

  • Learn about Andy Warhol and discuss his prints
  • Continue sketching our celebrity portraits in paint-by-number style (as shown in the example in this blog post) on posterboard
  • Label each section of the portrait with the appropriate value
  • Post a photo of our progress to the blog

Creating a Monochromatic Painting

Today’s essential question: How can I turn my Photoshop celebrity prints into a monochromatic painting?

Today we will begin the painting portion of our projects. You will be required to post a photo of your progress to  your blog every day in order to receive participation points. You may use the WordPress app on your phone, or borrow a class camera from Ms. Lawson.

Steps to creating our monochromatic celebrity paintings

  1. We will start with our black and white cutout prints:
    drake_cut_paper_edited
  2. Use the print as a reference to draw a paint-by-number image with the values labeled:
    drake_paint_by_number
  3. Mix a monochromatic value scale and use it to paint our celebrity:
    drake_painting_exemplar

Today we will:

  • Introduce the painting portion of the celebrity unit
  • Begin sketching our celebrity portraits in paint-by-number style (as shown in the example in this blog post) on posterboard
  • Label each section of the portrait with the appropriate value
  • Post a photo of our progress to the blog

*Creating a Unified Set of Four Prints

Today’s Essential Question: How will you tie your favorite 4 prints together so they read as one unified artwork? (Remember, you will mount your favorite four prints onto one piece of poster board like my example on the bulletin board. You will want your 4 chosen prints to read as one unified artwork.)

Today we will finish our set of celebrity prints. Each print should contain a different color scheme. Aim for 8-10 prints total. This will give you the most options to pick from, ensuring that your set of four prints will display unity.

Remember, the design seeds website is a great resource for color schemes.

By the end of today’s class, make sure the following have been posted to your blog (anything you posted in a previous blog entry does not need to be reposted):

  • The grayscale cutout image of your celebrity (I will print these and you will use them as a reference for your monochromatic painting)
    drake_cut_paper_edited
  • Every version of your celebrity that you have created. You will not like every image, and that is ok. The point of this project is to experiment with different color schemes that push the boundaries of our comfort zone.
  • A separate blog post with
    • the four images that you plan to print and mount together. Here are some examples:
      Jordyn - 10th Grade

      Jordyn – 10th Grade

      Marina - 10th Grade

      Marina – 10th Grade

    • Create a folder in your Google Drive with your set of 4 favorite prints, and share this folder with Ms. Lawson

Today we will:

  • Finish creating our celebrity prints
  • Post all the prints (including the original black and white one) to our blogs
  • Create a second post with our favorite set of 4 unified prints
  • Create a folder in your Google Drive with your set of 4 favorite prints, and share this folder with Ms. Lawson

Adding Color to Our Celebrity Portraits: Day 2

artist-dog2.pngToday we will continue adding color to our celebrity portraits. Review last class’s blog post for step-by-step instructions on how to do this. Each time you create an image with a different color scheme, make sure to save it as a different file name so you don’t save over the work you have already done. All color schemes should be uploaded to both your Google Drive (in your Foundations 1 folder that you have shared with Ms. Lawson) and your class blog. The design seeds website has lots of great color scheme ideas.

Today we will:

  • Review how to add color in Photoshop and save different versions for each color scheme
  • Create several variations of our portrait using different color schemes
  • Upload all of our work to our shared Foundations 1 Google Drive folder
  • Create a new blog post with each differently colored version of our celebrity
